AN advertising copywriter with a journalist’s heart

A journalist-turned-copywriter, Julie’s writing career got its start either in Mrs. Goddard’s 9th grade English class or possibly as early as pre-K penmanship. Either way, Julie continues to wield the power of storytelling to connect people and brands — using insights that resonate to foster community, create new experiences and drive authentic engagement.

Part writer, part strategist, part anthropologist, over the past 20 years Julie has explored the worlds of die-hard runners, women engineers, clean eaters, modest dressers, kids with disabilities, groundbreaking architects, tech nerds, organic farmers, the unbanked and so many more. With every project she uncovers different facets of the human experience and figures out how they intersect with a given client’s brand promise.

Julie has worked on both the agency and client side of advertising, and her enviable breadth of experience means you can assign her to everything from a YouTube pre-roll video to a fully integrated campaign and count on her to overdeliver. Some of the brands she’s had the good fortune to partner with are Life Time, U.S. Bank, Gillette Children’s, Dove, Navitas Organics, Blackberry, CleanWell, Kotex, Hatteras Yachts, Valspar, Bronson Healthcare, Del Taco and Nike, among others.

Originally from Massachusetts, Julie has lived and worked on both coasts as well as some of the Midwest’s top shops, including Ogilvy & Mather, Leo Burnett, Razorfish and Periscope. But some of her favorite projects she’s worked on don’t technically even count as “advertising” — concepting new product ideas for Adidas, for example, or brainstorming a concept store for a new clothing brand from American Eagle Outfitters.

Julie holds a dual bachelor’s in Latin American Studies and Economics from Wesleyan University, and a Master of Science in Communications from VCU Brandcenter. Her first year at VCU, Julie pursued the copywriting and strategic planning tracks simultaneously before ultimately deciding to specialize in copywriting. Nevertheless, the foundation was laid, and strategic thinking continues to be one of the aspects of the job that Julie enjoys most.

Julie is happiest using her talents to shine a halo on companies doing good in the world. The world needs more good. Always, but especially now.
